Lot Description
Rogers & Spencer Percussion Army Revolver
American Civil War
.44 caliber. 7.5" octagonal barrel length. SN: 4829. Blued finish, smooth walnut grips. Single-action solid frame percussion revolver with un-fluted six-chambered cylinder, loading lever, and fixed notch frame rear sight and German silver cone front sight. Topstrap marked ROGERS & SPENCER and UTICA N-Y on either side of the sighting groove. Matching serial numbers on lower left side of frame, on butt, on side of cylinder, on top flat of loading lever and inside both grips. Barrel serial number is mismatched, and is 4799. A soft script RPB cartouche, the mark of arsenal sub-inspector Robert P Beals is present on the left grip. Single letter sub-inspection marks are present on many of the components of the gun. The Rogers & Spencer was the pinnacle of percussion revolver design, but the 5,000 guns ordered by the Ordnance Department were only starting to be delivered in early 1865 as the Civil War was winding down. Only 1,500 guns were delivered prior to the cessation of hostilities and none were issued for field service. The guns were subsequently sold off at auction as surplus. A solid example of the last of the Civil War percussion revolver contracts and a gun that book ends any Civil War revolver collection. {ANTIQUE}
