Fine Arsenal Conversion of a US Model 1828 (1816 Type III) Musket by Springfield
American Civil War

.69 caliber. 42" round barrel secured by three flat, spring-retained barrel bands. NSN. Bright finish, color casehardened lock and hammer, iron furniture, walnut stock. Single shot percussion altered smoothbore muzzleloading musket with no rear sight, brass blade front sight, sling swivels and a button head ramrod. Lock marked with {Spread-Winged Eagle}/US forward of the hammer and in three vertical lines at the tail SPRING/FIELD/1839. Breech plug tang dated 1840. Left breech with typical P/{Eagle Head}/V proof marks. Counterpane with two clear script cartouches, the ET of Elisha Toby and the TW of Thomas Warner. A crisp block JBS stock inspection and a script AH Asahel Hubbard final inspection cartouche are behind the triggerguard. Overall a very fine and crisp example of the last of the US M1816 family of muskets to be produced at Springfield and subsequently altered to percussion. Theses guns saw extensive use on both sides during the first 12-18 months of the Civil War. {ANTIQUE}
