Lot Description

WWII 1st Marines Australian Made Ike Jacket
World War II

Green wool two-pocket waist-length jacket cut in British style with concealed buttons and mounting United States Marine Corps {Eagle, Globe, and Anchor} buttons to the lapels, and a red stitched 1st Marines patch to the left shoulder. The First Marines patch features the GUADALCANAL within a large red number 1, added after the division endured the horrific fighting on Guadalcanal during World War II. From August 7th through December of 1942, the 1st Marines fought the Imperial Japanese in brutal close-quarters fighting, despite being deprived of their heavy weapons and provisions due to the abrupt departure of Naval support following the Battle of Savo Island. Enduring disease, shortages of critical supplies, and lacking critical support, the 1st Marines stubbornly persisted throughout the campaign to follow. When they were finally relieved, the 1st Marines were sent to Melbourne, Australia for much needed rest and refit. During the journey, much of their uniforms and personal effects rotted in the hold of their transport, so the Marines were provided with replacement uniforms in largely British style by the Australians, including this jacket. To this day, the 1st Marines ship out to the famous Australian song "Waltzing Matilda", in honor of their time spent in Melbourne.
