Lot Description
US Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol by Waters
Mexican American War
.54 caliber. 8.5" smoothbore barrel secured by a single barrel barrel band. NSN. Bright finish, steel mountings, walnut stock. Single shot muzzleloading smoothbore flintlock pistol with captive swivel ramrod, fixed notch rear sight and brass blade front sight. Lock remains in original flint and is marked with an {Eagle Head} under the pan and in three lines: A WATERS/MILLBURY MS/1839. Breech with US/JCS/P inspection marks. Counterpane with two clear script cartouches, the JH of Joseph Hannis followed by the WAT of Ordnance Officer William Anderson Thornton. The US Model 1836 pistol was made in large quantities between 1837 and 1844 with some 41,000 being produced by two contractors, Robert Johnson and Asa Waters. Johnson produced slightly fewer of the guns at 18,000, with Waters producing the balance of 23,000. It was the last US military flintlock pistol and the standard pistol issued from the Seminole Wars through the Mexican American War. Thousands of the guns saw a second life during the American Civil War altered to percussion. {ANTIQUE}
