Single shot, breechloading cartridge carbine with M1861 pattern three-leaf rear sight, pinched front sight and saddle bar with ring. Lock marked in three horizontal lines JOSLYN FIREARMS Co/STONINGTON/CONN. Breechblock numbered 1300, no number on tang. Two legible Edward Flather EF script cartouches are present on the flat opposite the lock, above the saddle bar. Simple friction hooked breech latch as is standard on the early production guns, along with brass furniture including a single barrel band secured with both a small wood screw and a spring. Roughly 2,400 1st Model Joslyn (Model 1862) carbines were produced, with an additional 1,200 "transitional" carbines with the second pattern breech block but the earlier brass furniture, before transitioning to the iron mounted 2nd Model (Model 1864) carbines. Of those first 3,600 guns 2,200 were acquired by the US Government like this one, with the balance sold commercially. {ANTIQUE}
