Lot Description
Indian Wars Altered Spencer Model 1860 Carbine
Civil War / Indian Wars
.56-60 (.50RF Government). 22" barrel. SN: 47010. Blued and color casehardened finish, walnut stock and forend. Lever action, manually cocked, tubular butt magazine repeating carbine with folding military ladder rear sight, barleycorn front sight with brass blade insert, saddle bar and sling ring opposite the lock and sling swivel in toe of stock. Three line Spencer markings on top of receiver are weak due to the arsenal refinish. Matching serial numbers are present on the receiver tang and under the barrel. A clear script ESA in an oval cartouche is present on the reverse wrist behind the sling bar. A good example of a Civil War era Spencer carbine refurbished for Indian Wars service, with the addition of the Stabler magazine cut off, but retaining the original six-groove barrel rifling as apparently this gun did not need the three groove sleeve to be added when it was rebuilt. Retains the original Civil War era magazine follower tube as well. While this carbine was not listed in the Springfield Research Service serial number books, two guns close to it were. #46992 was issued to H company of the 6th NY Cavalry in 1865 and #47225 was issued to E company 19th NY Cavalry. No numbers were closer than these two to this gun. {ANTIQUE}
