Lot Description

Martially Inspected and Factory Converted Remington New Model Army Revolver

.44CF. 8" octagonal barrel. SN: 141530. Blued finish, color casehardened hammer, brass triggerguard, two-piece smooth walnut grips. Single action factory cartridge conversion of a Remington New Model Army US military contract single action percussion revolver with a cartridge modified six-chambered un-fluted cylinder, dovetailed and screwed factory recoil shield and added and without an ejector rod added. Standard frame notch rear sight and pinched blade front sight. Standard Remington "New Model" barrel markings, with the last line very weak. US military inspection and sub-inzspeciotn marks are found throughout, including script GRC (G.R. Curtis) and OWA (Orville W Ainsworth) cartouches on the grips. The right grip is also stamped with number or alphanumeric mark 08 over the Curtis cartouche. This mark is of the same basic size and style as those found on the "CA" frame marked Remington conversion revolvers. The factory conversion number 392 is stamped under the barrel, on the bottom of the arbor pin "wings", and on the left side of the loading lever web. The grips have illegible pencil markings on their interior. A solid example of what McDowell refers to as a "Smith & Wesson Remington Conversion" without an added factory ejector rod. {ANTIQUE}
