Lot Description
Fine Punjab Made East India Company Flintlock Officer's Pistol
22 Bore (.60 caliber). 9.5" pinned round swamped barrel with top salt. NSN. Bright finish, steel furniture, hardwood stock with checkered grip. Single shot smoothbore muzzleloading flintlock pistol with horn tipped wooden ramrod. Lock remains in original flint and is marked with the East Indian Company's "Rampant Lion" under the pan and with what appears to be an Urdu marking at the tail that provides a name of a potential maker and roughly "made in Lahore", a city in Punjab, which is now part of Pakistan. At the time this pistol was made (probably circa 1830s-1850s), the Punjab region was under control of the Sikh Empire and then in 1849 fell under the control of the East India Company, with the British Raj taking control in 1858. The pistol is made in a French form that was popular with French officers and some British officers as well, who were required to purchase and provide their own sidearms. Likely this was made to be sold to a less wealthy East India Company Officer, possibly in a Sikh regiment. A very nice and crisp pistol that likely dates from the early period of the British Raj and a time when the East India Company had one of the largest standing armies in the world.
