Lot Description

US Model 1822 (1816 Type II) Contract Musket by Pomeroy
Mexican-American War

.69 caliber. 42" barrels. NSN. Moderately oxidized metal that was originally browned, iron furniture, walnut musket stock. Single shot smoothbore muzzleloading flintlock musket with three flat, spring retained barrel bands, brass blade front sight and stud for socket bayonet on top of barrel near muzzle. Lock marked with a {Spread Winged Eagle} over L POMEROY horizontally forward of the cock and 1829/US in two vertical lines at the tail. Lock remains in original flint configuration and is not altered. Breech plug tang with partially legible date that reads 183?. Breech with US/NWP/{Starburst}-P inspection marks. Counterpane with the script JM cartouche of Justin Murphy. Side plate is stamped in a sans-serif font, JM 9TH ACO. Bottom of stock stamped J.M.-MEXICO A. CO./9TH INF. in the same sans-serif font. Retains original upper sling swivel, lower swivel is a replacement. Includes a period button head ramrod that is about 2" short of full length with the end of the rod modified to be a screwdriver. The 9th US Infantry was engaged during the Mexican-American War and marched into the country with Zachary Taylor's command, seeing combat at a number of battles including Churubusco, Molino del Ray and Chapultepec (Mexico City). However the stampings appear to be of more recent vintage than the period of the Mexican-American War. {ANTIQUE}
