Lot Description

US Model 1888 Springfield Trapdoor Ramrod Bayonet Rifle
Spanish American War

.45-70. 32.375" barrel. SN: 331844 (mfg. ca. 1887).Blued and color casehardened finish, steel furniture, full-length walnut stock. Single shot breechloading military rifle with M1884 Buffington rear sight, Barleycorn front sight with protective hood, ramrod bayonet, one-piece triggerguard, 3-click tumbler, sling and stacking swivels and tool compartment in butt with M1879 tool inside. Standard lock markings for this period of production and 1884 breech block marking. A legible script SWP/1891 cartouche is present at the left wrist and a {Circle-P} firing proof is still visible behind the triggerguard. By serial number this should be an M1884 Rifle, not an M1888 Rod Bayonet Rifle. It is not clear if the gun was rebuilt at some point in time or if it was built with an older receiver, but the receiver is of an older production vintage than the balance of the rifle. Includes a US M1887 sling correct for this rifle, US Krag rifles and early production M1903 rifles. {ANTIQUE}
