Lot Description
Pair of Silver Mounted English Flintlock Holster Pistols by Barbar
French & Indian War
.60 caliber. 12" pinned barrels. NSN. Browned barrels, silver mountings, smooth varnished walnut stocks. Single shot smoothbore flintlock holster pistols with brass blade front sights, no rear sights and wooden ramrods with flat metal faces. 5.25" slightly convex flint locks remain in original flint and are marked BARBAR. Locks with integral rounded, fenced and bridled steel pans, rounded swan neck cocks and faceted frizzes with rounded toes. Tops of barrels marked BARBAR on the nocksform. Breeches with London gunmakers {CROWN/GP} and {CROWN/V} proof and view marks and the */IB maker's mark of James Barbar (Barber). Silver mounted with grotesque mask butt caps, open work side plates, lightly engraved triggerguards with urn finials, thimble and entry pipe and thumb escutcheon, but only the triggerguards show external London silver hallmarks. These include a {Lion passant}, the {King} and a {Gothic B} in a shield date code, indicating the silver was marked in 1757. Stocks with raised carved moldings at the tails of the locks and counterpanes and shell motif aprons around the breech plug tangs. One ramrod includes an integral wiper at the end and the other is threaded for tools. James Barbar was apprenticed to his father, London gunmaker Lewis Barbar in 1714, was free of the Gunmaker's Company with his proof piece passed in 1722, elected Assistant in 1737 and passed as Master in 1737. He was appointed "Gentleman Armorer" to King George II in 1741 and Furbisher at Hampton Court, a post he resigned from in 1767. His premises were on Portugal Street 1726-1767 and Dover Street 1739-1767. James Barbar died in 1773. (Blackmore) {ANTIQUE}
