Lot Description

Randall Model 12 11" Smithsonian "Brass Back" Bowie Bowie and Scabbard

10.875" clip point Bowie blade with 4.875" false edge and prominent median ridge. Blade width at ricasso 2.125". A 5.25" long brass insert is present along the spine of the blade. Overall length 16.125" with a 5.25" hilt that has a 4" brass cross guard and a 4.375" oval cross section palm swelled black Micarta grip with fluted brass pommel cap. The reverse of the blade is marked in two lines with the typical {RANDAL MADE/ORLANDO, FLA} mark, flanked by a pair of scimitars. A Randall marked heavy duty leather sheath that is also marked 12 and 11 (Model 12, 11" blade) on the rear, accompanies the knife and includes the whetstone in the pocket on the front. According to the Randall website this knife is based upon one in the Smithsonian's collection and is similar to the knife used in the film The Iron Mistress. These "brass back" extra feature knives were only available from circa 1953 to about 1982, after which the only craftsman who could apply the brass to the Randall's standards passed away and no other workman could ever perform the work correctly. As a result these brass back knives are rather scarce and highly collectible.
