Lot Description

Non-Functional Post War Alteration of a US Model 1860 Army Revolver for Indian War Use
Indian Wars

.44 caliber. 7.75" barrel. SN: 15537 (mfg. ca. 1861). Blued and color casehardened finish, brass triggerguard, one-piece walnut grip. Single action percussion revolver with four screw frame, six-chambered rebated unfluted cylinder, hammer nose notch rear sight and German silver blade front sight. Revolver rebuilt for Indian War service, likely at the St. Louis Arsenal with entirely mismatched numbers and marked US forward of the triggerguard on the triggerguard plate. Frame number is 15537, barrel is 86296, triggerguard is 138282, butt is 144439 and the arbor has the partial number 4308. The cylinder has been polished during the rebuilding process, removing the scene and the serial number. The wedge is an unnumbered replacement. The one-line New York barrel address is light due to polishing prior to refinishing, as is the COLT'S/PATENT mark on the frame. The remnants of illegible cartouches are visible on both sides of the grip. Many of these rebuilt "US" marked, mixed numbered 1860 Army revolvers saw service with the 10th US Cavalry during the Indian Wars. {ANTIQUE}
