Lot Description

Decorated Ottoman Kilij or Pala with Wootz Steel Blade

30.5" curved single edged blade with multiple fullers. 1.5" wide at ricasso. Overall length 36.5". 5.5" Mameluke hilt of Syrian style with horn grip scales, brass and steel decorations, brass backstrap and 6.25" steel cross guard and 1.25" langets. Blade with etched script on the obverse and with maker's marks on the reverse with gilt highlights and decorations. Blade likely Persian circa late 18th to mid-19th century and of very high quality when it was new. Hilt may be slightly more recent, mid-19th century or so and mated to the older blade that was repurposed. The entire piece appears to have been together for a very long time and from a period of active use.
