Lot Description

19th Century Nepalese or Bangali Ram Dao Sacrificial Sword

31" curving blade with blunt tip and reverse hooked bill, creating the rudimentary silhouette of some sort of creature, possibly a rhinoceros. Blade 4.75" wide at widest point, and .82" thick at the spine, near the ricasso. Overall length 42". 10" two-handed hilt with round copper grip, 2" square and .4" thick decorated copper guard and sliding decorative 3.5" diameter copper disc guard at base of grip. Blade decorated with engraved foliate patterns, gilt highlights and a gilt eye near the tip. Spine decorated with brass near the hilt. These massive swords were used to decapitate buffalo during the Hindu festival of Dessehra. A massive and impressive ethnographic sword. Overall weight is just under 10 pounds, so extra shipping costs will apply.
