Spanish Etched Steel Cup Hilt Rapier with Klingenthal Blade
34.25" tapered doubled edged spear point blade with diamond cross section, .9" wide at ricasso. Overall length 43.5". 6.5" hilt with 5.25" diameter cup guard, 2.25" deep and deeply etched with floral patterns. 10.125" long cross guard etched in the same style with bulbous quillons. Two large pas-d'anes, leather covered grooved grip with 16 wraps of twisted wire. Bulbous pommel cap. Obverse of blade with Klingenthal maker's mark and the reverse with the Coloux mark, suggesting the blade is circa 1801-1806 and obverse ricasso with {Crown}/B and {Crown}/D controller and inspection marks. Apparently a late Spanish rapier, from the first quarter of the 19th century using a commercial Klingenthal blade.
