Lot Description
US Model 1832 Heavy Artillery Sword by Ames dated 1835
Mexican-American War
19" double-edged wasp-waisted spear point blade with a 10.5" long double stopped median fuller and a pair of 3.25" secondary double stopped fullers. Blade 1.75" wide at ricasso. Overall length 25.125". 6" cast brass hilt with fish scale pattern grip and 4.125" cross guard. Obverse of blade stamped with a {Spread-Winged Eagle}/NP AMES/SPRINGFIELD with the reverse stamped UNITED/STATES/1835. Face of guard with ORD stamp, the HKC cartouche of US Ordnance Officer Henry Knox Craig and the italicized JM of civilian sub-inspector Justin Murphy. The sword is accompanied by an incorrect brass mounted leather scabbard that is likely of Continental origin, which is slightly too short for the sword to seat fully.
