US Model 1870 Springfield Trapdoor Cadet Rifle
Indian Wars

.50-70. 29.5" barrel length. SN: 1330. Blued metal finish overall mounting straight wrist walnut full length stock retained by two barrel bands. Single shot trapdoor action rifle mounting replaced adjustable rear ladder and front blade sights. Item features a narrow receiver, high arch breechblock, two-click action, spring-loaded firing pin, smooth trigger, and no sling loops. Markings include matching serial numbers to the left barrel and frame. Lockplate is dated 1863 behind the hammer and further marked {Spread Winged Eagle} forward of the hammer with U.S./SPRINGFIELD. Breechblock is struck 1870/{Eaglehead}/US. Stock is circle P marked to the rear wrist with the counterpane displaying a weakened circled ESA cartouche of inspector Erskine S. Allin, mastermind of the American trapdoor action rifles. Buttplate struck US and the upper barrel band is marked with a single U. Comes with a flat tipped cleaning rod. {ANTIQUE}
