Lot Description

USMC Officers Mameluke Sword by Hilborn-Hamberger Named to John J Hoagland

31.5" curved single edged quill-back blade with 16" median fuller, .9" wide at ricasso. Overall length 37.5". Mameluke hilt with brass cross guard and backstrap and composite grip scales. Blade etched with floral, martial and patriotic motifs, with both sides of the blade etched UNITED STATES MARINES and with the name John J Hoagland engraved on the reverse. Spine engraved USMC SERIAL NO 323. Maker's mark is etched under the langet on the reverse. Includes a brass mounted nickel plated scabbard. Cursory research suggests that the officer named on this sword was Lt. John J Hoagland, a pilot in the USMC Reserves who flew in Vietnam circa 1968-1968 and received several Air Medals for meritorious service in both individual action and strike actions against the enemy. Further research may prove fruitful.
