Springfield Model 1871 Spencer Rifle, Carbine Arsenal Altered to Rifle
Indian Wars
.50RF. 32.5" barrel. SN: 20246. Blued and color casehardened finish, walnut buttstock and forend secured by two solid, spring retained barrel bands. Lever action repeating rifle with butt magazine and follower, arsenal altered from carbine with Stabler cut-off, M1868 ladder rear sight, musket pattern combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivel on upper barrel band and mount in toe of stock missing swivel, correct grooved base magazine tube follower in butt, no cleaning rod. Standard Burnside Rifle Company M1865 markings on top of receiver, script ESA cartouche to rear of sling bar. Springfield barrel serial numbered to match the receiver. In 1871 the Springfield Armory assembled 1,108 Spencer Infantry Rifles from Burnside contract M1865 Spencer Carbines. During the process the guns had newly made Springfield barrels added to them and they were refinished. {ANTIQUE}
