Lot Description

Metropolitan Arms Co Police Percussion Revolver
American Civil War

.36 caliber. 4.5" barrel. SN: 1914. Blued finish, color case hardened frame, silver plated brass triggerguard and backstrap, one-piece smooth varnished walnut grip. Single action percussion revolver with fluted five-chambered cylinder, hammer nose notch rear sight and brass cone front sight. Barrel with one line METROPOLITAN ARMS Co NEW-YORK marking. Matching serial numbers on bottom of barrel, frame, triggerguard, butt and on cylinder. The Metropolitan Arms Company was established by a consortium of New York gun makers including Orison Blunt and William and Samuel Syms, as well as some investors, to take advantage of the market void left by the fire in the Colt factory in February of 1864. They produced two primary products, both essentially copies of Colt firearms, a Model 1851 Navy revolver and a Model 1862 Police revolver. About 2,750 of the these "pocket police" revolvers were produced, circa 1864-1866. Some of the production was unmarked as to maker, but this is one of the marked examples. Needs mechanical attention. {ANTIQUE}
