Lot Description
Imported US Model 1850 Staff & Field Officers Sword Retailer Marked by Staderman
30.75" single edged spear point blade with 22" stopped median fuller, 1" wide at ricasso. Overall length 36.5". 5.75" cast brass hilt with US in the face of the guard and a grooved wooden grip covered in leather and with 13 wraps of multi-strand wire. Reverse ricasso stamped STADERMAN. Blade etched with foliate, martial and patriotic themes. The sword is accompanied by a browned steel scabbard with gilt brass mountings. John C. Staderman emigrated from Germany circa 1848 and established a business dealing in and making "gimps & fringes" in New York City. Circa 1863 he added military gods and furnishings to his wares and was listed as being "importers and manufacturers of military goods, including swords, sashes, belts & shoulder straps, etc." (Bazelon & McGuinn) The firm went out of business in 1876 but apparently only dealt in military goods circa 1863-1865. An uncommon retailer mark to find on Civil War period officers sword.
