Lot Description

[Contemporary Daguerreotype by Romer]

A brilliant 5"x7" daguerreotype depicting the rooftop of Les Halles in Paris, in a 10"x12" frame, made and mounted by Grant Romer (American b. 1946).

In August, 1989 Romer and Irving Pobboravsky were commissioned by the Musee Carnvalet (Museum of the City of Paris) to make a series of daguerreotypes in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Daguerre's revolutionary discovery They made 40 daguerreotypes, each alternating command of the camera and choice of subject; 20 were retained by the museum for its collection, representing 10 of each daguerreotypist's work. The remaining plates were divided equally between Romer and Pobboravsky, keeping their own production.

Two of Romer's images were subsequently acquired by a private collector, who donated them to the collection of the George Eastman Museum. This is only the third from the series to have been offered publicly.
