Lot Description

[NATURAL HISTORY]. STUKELEY, William. The Philosophy of Earthquakes, Natural and Religious. Or An Inquiry Into Their Cause, and Their Purpose. London: Printed for C. Corbet, 1750.

2 parts in one, 8vo. (Some soiling to first title-page.) Modern morocco.

SECOND EDITION. London had been shaken by a devastating earthquake in 1750 and this paper by Stukeley was an attempt to explain earthquakes as caused by electricity. Stukeley also argued that earthquakes were manifestations of divine will and sought to reconcile emerging geological theories with Christian doctrine. ESTC T180036.
