New York: D. Appleton & Company, [1872-74].
2 volumes, large 4to. 49 full-page steel-engraved plates including additional titles and frontispiece engravings, numerous wood engravings in the text. Original brown morocco over heavy boards, gilt-lettered covers ruled in blind, raised bands, gilt-lettered compartments with fillets in blind, all edges gilt (mild rubbing to extremes).
FIRST EDITION with Bryant’s name only appearing on the vol.2 title-page. Considered one of the great books of American illustrations. BAL 1732.
