4to (260 x 197 mm). Engraved frontispiece, 40 engraved plates (6 folding). (Some offsetting or light browning.) Modern half calf. Provenance: Peal Library, Walpole Park, Ealing (rubberstamp and call number on title-page, rubberstamps on all plates).
FIRST EDITION, including an additional unnumbered plate with the earliest depiction of Cuff's aquatic microscope not called for in Nissen. Ellis includes a description of a large octopus observed near the North Pole by a whaling party in the summer of 1753. Nissen ZBI 1281.
