Lot Description

[NATURAL HISTORY]. DUPPA, Richard (1770-1831). The Classes and Orders of the Linnaean System of Botany. London: T. Bensley for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1816.


3 volumes, 8vo. 240 engraved plates, all but 3 hand-colored. Contemporary plum straight-grain morocco gilt, spines in 5 compartments with 4 flat raised bands, gilt-lettering in 2, gilt-tooling in others, all edges gilt. Provenance: Robert King (armorial bookplate).

FIRST EDITION, hand-colored issue. Duppa describes at length the taxonomic system first developed by Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus. "This work is intended to be a complete illustration of the Linnaean system of Botany...This work was originally begun as an amusement, and it has gradually expanded in size" (Introduction). Includes a dictionary of botanical terms and a general index. The work was published in both colored and uncolored issues. Lowndes II, 700; Great Flower Books 56.
