8vo (210 x 135 mm). Half-title; engraved frontispiece, engraved title, 38 engraved plates after Hablot K. Browne ["Phiz"]. (Light spotting to plates, pp.87-96 and 2 plates misbound.) 20th century polished calf gilt, spine 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, red and olive lettering-pieces gilt in 2, others gilt tooled, all edges gilt, stamp-signed by Riviere.

FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, including the first example of a so-called "dark plate," facing p. 547. Early issue with 2-line errata leaf, vignette title with Cuttle's hook in left hand, "if" missing in line 9 on p.426, no period at end of last line on p.582.
