Lot Description

First edition. Folio. Unpaginated, but 63 leaves. Illustrated with photolithographic title-page and 29 color monochrome plates. Publisher's decorated cloth, stamped in blind, white, and brown, front gutter starting and boards soiled, tail cap perished, corners bumped, brown morocco label mounted to front board, stamped in gilt, reading "From the Spring Garden Institute - John Baird Testimonial To The Architectural Drawing Class Term 1880-81 - Third Prize Awarded to Frank Royer."; text leaves and plates fairly clean.
First edition of the British decorative artist and designer Lewis Foreman Day's first book.
Lewis F. Day (1845-1910) was an important figure in the British Arts and Crafts movement, one time master of the Art Workers Guild, and served on the Council of the Royal Society of Arts.
The Spring Garden Institute was a private technical college founded in 1851 in the section of Philadelphia bearing its name. It operated until 1992 when it was closed due to declining enrollment,
