8vo (220 x 137 mm). Half-title; 8 steel-engraved plates, engraved folding map with hand-colored route, engraved folding plan of Salt Lake City, numerous wood-engraved illustrations. (Marginal browning or staining.) Original green cloth, upper cover with gilt medallion, spine gilt lettered, advertisement pastedowns, uncut (spine darkened and ends repaired, fore-corners worn, hinges reinforced, new front and rear flyleaves inserted). Provenance: J. Barnard (early ownership signature).
FIRST EDITION, describing Burton’s 1860 journey through Sioux territory to Salt Lake City. “The City of Saints is one of [Burton's] best works… a rare account by an experienced traveler who was alert to every detail, to language, to the nuances of a dynamic developing nation” (Rice, Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton, pp.334-335).
