4to. Engraved portrait frontispiece, 3 engraved maps (2 folding). (Light spotting to plates.) Contemporary speckled sheep, morocco lettering-piece gilt in second compartment (extremities rubbed). Provenance: German Society Library of Philadelphia (bookplate, stamp on title-page); Henry & Carol Faul (bookplate).
SECOND EDITION. Burckhardt, a Swiss explorer, traveled to Nubia between 1813 and 1814. As part of his expedition for the African Association, Burckhardt journeyed down the Nile, becoming one of the first Europeans to visit the great temple at Abu Simbel. He explored the Nubian region, reaching as far as Shendi in Central Sudan. Blackmer 238; Weber I, 106.
