Provenance: Frederick James Volney Skiff (1851-1921), former director of the Field Museum of Natural History (recipient of author's inscription on upper cover); Field Museum Library (withdrawn stamp on upper cover).

FIRST EDITION. INSCRIBED BY WINCHELL TO THE DIRECTOR OF THE FIELD MUSEUM. Winchell was a distinguished American geologist and educator, following in the footsteps of his father, Alexander Winchell, a prominent geologist. Winchell is credited with pioneering the spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic studies on minerals.
