Lot Description

[Literature] Lawrence, T.E. Crusader Castles

(London): Golden Cockerel Press, 1936. In two volumes. First and limited English edition, #19/1,000 numbered copies printed in Perpetua type on British mould-made paper. From the library of B.H. Liddell Hart, and with his large book-plate on front paste-down of each volume. Illustrated with numerous reproductions of drawings, plans, and sketches, as well as two large folding maps, loose in linen-backed paper envelope, as issued, and laid in at rear of Vol. I. Publisher's three-quarter brown morocco over cream buckram-covered boards, stamped in blind and in gilt; top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed; by Sangorski & Sutcliffe; slip case wanting. O'Brien A188 and A189

A fine association copy, from the library of Sir Basil Henry Liddell Hart (1895-1970). Hart was a British soldier, military historian, military theorist, and friend of Lawrence's. Hart wrote the first serious biography of Lawrence, Lawrence of Arabia (1934), which was critical in creating the mythology surrounding Lawrence.
