Lot Description
[Literature] [Hearn, Lafcadio] The Writings of Lafcadio Hearn
Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1922. In 16 volumes. #161/750 numbered sets of the large-paper edition, signed by Koizumi Setsuko, Hearn's second wife, in Japanese characters and with her red seal, on a tipped-in leaf of japon vellum. Although uncalled for, a single leaf of manuscript of Hearn's is also tipped in. 8vo. Publisher's deluxe binding of quarter faux vellum over green silk jacquard-covered boards, some spotting to spines, dent in top edge of front board in volumes 6-10, tidemark to bottom of spine on volumes 13-16 (affecting silk on Volume 16); top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed; printed decorative endpapers; each volume in original linen dust-jacket, stamped in gilt; book-plate of Samuel Crawford Gillespie on verso of first free leaf in Volume 12 only. BAL 7977
Although uncalled for in this edition, the autograph manuscript included here appears to be a draft from Hearn's short story, "The Reconciliation", which was originally published in 1900 in his book Shadowings, a collection of Japanese folk tales.
