Fine profile portrait of English poet and novelist Robert Graves (1895-1985), taken during his service in the First World War.
Graves enlisted in the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers immediately following the outbreak of hostilities. He quickly saw combat and began to write realistic accounts of his experiences, and developed a reputation as a war poet, before he was seriously wounded at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Nearly a decade after the war he published his autobiographical account, Goodbye To All That, and this photograph was used for American publicity of the work. The book was first published in London in 1929.
