Lot Description

[Hawaii] [Baseball] Hawaiian Baseball Broadside and Flag

Honolulu, Hawaii, June 2, 1898. Printed broadside, 13 3/8 x 8 1/8 in. (340 x 206 mm). Together with a silk Hawaiian flag with string attachments at hoist.

A rare broadside issued at the beginning of the Spanish-American War, advertising a baseball game and other events for U.S. troops stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii; organized by M.E. Grossman, Chairman of Entertainment Committee. After the war broke out in April, 1898, U.S. troops were stationed in Hawaii (a pro-US coup occurred there in 1893), as a staging ground for attacks on the Spanish Philippines. Baseball was introduced to Hawaii by Alexander Cartwright, the "Father of Baseball", in the 1850s.

This lot is located in Philadelphia.
