Lot Description
[Hawaii] Thrum, Thos. G. Hawaiian Almanac and Annual for 1878. Hawaii's Centennial...A Hand Book of Information on Matters Relating to the Hawaiian Islands, Original and Selected, of Value to Merchants, Planters, Tourists, and Others
Honolulu: Thrum & Oat, (1877). 8vo. (viii, ads), 56, (12, ads) pp. Original limp printed wrappers, lightly soiled and worn, splitting along front and rear joints; all edges trimmed; small book-plate at top of inner front wrapper ("JF"); scattered spotting and contemporary annotations to text.
Rare centennial issue of this almanac for the Hawaiian Islands, containing valuable information and statistics on its population, government, and businesses, as well as information on its meteorology and geology, currency exchange rates, overland and inter-island distances, board of education, postal service, imports and exports, and a directory of businesses and various organizations. The 20 pages of ads are of particular note, and list various types of businesses, including saloons, hotels, restaurants, iron works, gun dealers, dry goods, steamship transportation, an auction house, a photography studio, as well as furniture dealers, grocers, and apothecaries.
OCLC locates only two copies, at the American Antiquarian Society and in the British Library (seemingly partial). Another copy is located at the University of Hawaii. According to RBH this is only the second copy to ever come to auction.
