Lot Description
RICHARDSON, James. Travels in the Great Desert of Sahara, in the years 1845 and 1846. London: Richard Bentley, 1848.
2 volumes, 8vo. With folding route map and 3 engraved plates. (Folding map with short tear at gutter repaired verso.) Contemporary half morocco gilt. Provenance: Paul and Harriet Billingsley (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. As an advocate of the Anti-Slavery Society, Richardson traveled alone with the modest sponsorship of a London newspaper on a fact-finding expedition to penetrate south of the Sahara to Timbuktu and the Niger. His objective was "to open a regular and secure way over the Sahara from the Mediterranean to the Niger" to suppress the slave trade.
