Lot Description
[HARRIMAN ALASKA EXPEDITION]. BURROUGHS, John (1837-1921); MUIR, John (1938-1914); GRINNELL, George B. (1849-1938), et al. Alaska. New
2 volumes (of 12, comprising Vols. I & II), 4to. With half-titles, 5 maps (2 of which are folding route maps on one leaf) & numerous plates (some in color, many photogravures). Original publisher's ribbed green cloth gilt, top edges gilt. Provenance: Ladies Library Association, Port Huron (bookplate). FIRST EDITION describing the expedition planned and financed by Edward H. Harriman as a summer cruise for his family. It was the most elaborate private expedition to Alaska to date, including more than 25 scientists, writers (including John Muir), photographers (including Edward Curtis), artists, and 100 guests. Many of the photogravures are after Curtis. Arctic Bibliography 6676, 6677 (the official reports published by the Smithsonian 1910-1913).
