Lot Description
ELLIS, Robert. A. (1820-1885). Treatise on Hannibal's Passage of the Alps, in which his route is traced over the Little Mont Cenis. Cam
8vo. With 6 engraved route maps (5 hand-colored, 3 folding). (Light spotting to maps and a few leaves.) Contemporary half green morocco gilt, marbled boards. Provenance: Christopher Turnor (1809-1886) member of Parliament (Stoke Rochford Library bookplate).FIRST EDITION of Ellis's rare work repudiating claims that Hanibal passed through the Alps via the Little or Great St. Bernard or the Mont Genevre pass. Ellis suggests Hannibal traversed along the Mont Cenis, on the route of the present-day Geneva-Turin railroad. Perret 1492.
