Lot Description
BOURRIT, Marc Theodore (1739-1819). Description des Alpes Pennines et Rhetiennes... Geneva: Chez J.P. Bonnant, 1781.
2 volumes, 8vo (194 x 115 mm). Folding engraved map, 8 engraved plates. Contemporary French mottled calf, smooth spines gilt, tan calf lettering-pieces gilt (expertly restored at head and foot of spines, covers slightly bowed). FIRST EDITION. Bourrit was in the forefront of Alpine exploration and can be credited with raising public interest in a first ascent of Mont Blanc. He was Precentor of Geneva Cathedral, an "artist, singer, snob and interminable raconteur... and endearing coward [on the peaks] with a genius for self-promotion" (Fleming), calling himself 'Historian of the Alps' and doing all he could to acquaint the public with their beauty. Perret 0658.
