Lot Description

TANNER, Henry Schenck (1786-1858). A New College Atlas consisting of a series of General Maps of the Various Grand Divisions of the Known World. Adapted to the Course of Geographical Instruction usually pursued in the Colleges and High Schools of the United States. Philadelphia: by the author, 1826 (but most maps dated 1828). Folio (537 x 363 mm). 7 hand-colored engraved maps (6 double-page). (Overall spotting, marginal stains.) Original red roan-backed marbled boards (overall wear, text block detached). Presumed second edition, preceded by an edition of 1826, with maps from Tanner's American Atlas and pocket maps. According to Rumsey, "not many copies were produced or survived - this is the only copy we have seen in over 30 years." SCARCE: according to online auction records, no copy of any edition of this atlas has sold at auction in the last 40 years.
