Lot Description

GINSBERG, Allen (1926-1997). Siesta in Xbalba and Return to the States. As published Near Icy Cape, Alaska At the Sign of the Midnight Sun, July 1956. 8vo. Original mimeographed wrappers, stapled as issued. Provenance: Sold Parke-Bernet 1970, sale 3024, lot 067 (envelope and lot tag, erroneously stating that the copy was signed); Donald R. Reisfield (inscription from Ginsberg); purchased from the estate by the present owner.A scarce copy of Ginsberg's second work, with his mimeographed signature below the introduction, one of about 53 copies mimeographed by Ginsberg on a ship off the coast of Alaska. LATER INSCRIPTION FROM GINSBERG below the mimeographed signature to Donald Reisfield: "This copy circa 1986 belongs to Donald R. Reisfield Allen Ginsberg Rutgers March 16 AH" (Ginsberg's characteristic tag). Martha Rexroth had previously produced a mimeographed edition of Howl in 1955 for her husband Kenneth Rexroth's poetry class at San Francisco State College. RARE: according to American Book Prices Current, only three copies of this work have sold at auction in the last 40 years; of the 53 copies produced, 33 are now in institutions.
