Lot Description

FILLMORE, Millard (1800-1874). Autograph letter signed ("Millard Fillmore"), as President, to Philip. R. Fendall, Esq. Washington, D.C., 8 July 1851. 1 page, 4to, a few small holes to blind seal at upper left, minor creasing. Fillmore writes the U. S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, on the Trial of George A. Gardiner in the Criminal Court: "I have perused and herewith return the testimony re the Gardiner case, which you enclose me this morning. The case looks suspicious and I hope Mr Poote will be critically examined" The case involved an indictment against Gardiner for perjury in reference to his claim agains the United States for losses in silver mines at the outbreak of the Mexican War.
