Half-title ("Ethnilogical Researches, repsecting the Red Man of America"), engraved title ("Information respecting the History Condition and Prospects..."), numerous plates and maps. (A few pale spots.) Publisher's brown gold-stamped cloth (joints, spine ends and extremities lightly worn, upper hinge starting). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Luke Lea, Commissioner of Indian Affairs, 1850-1853: "Hon. Saml. Brenton, with respects of L. Lea Comm. Ind. Affr." Luke Lea served as the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, under whose auspices Schoolcraft undertook his work. Samuel Brenton was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Indiana's 10th District from March 1851 until March 1853. Field p.353; Sabin 7849.
