Lot Description

SPECTOR, BUZZ Two artists books. Double Readings. Chicago: 1987. Thin 8vo, original pictorial wraps, artist book produced in conjunction with a 4,500 wedge-shaped book installation of the same name at Randolph Street Gallery in Chicago, April 10-May 12, 1987. The installation, Spector's largest in Chicago, comprised books from his own collection, Powell's and the University of Chicago. The Position of the Author. With an essay by Colin Gardner. New York: Visual Studies Workshop, 1993. Thin 8vo, original pictorial wraps. Produced during a one week residency at the Visual Studies Workshop in December, 1991, this artists book appropriates print elements (largely from dust jackets and images of books furnishing rooms gleaned from magazines and journals) with two critical essays by Spector and Gardner. According to Spector, "Gardner's commissioned essay was meant to function as another art element in the book, an artifact of the history of the posing repertoire I was examining through accompanying strategies of appropriation."
