Lot Description

A collection of seven English and European mourning pendants, 18th / 19th century

Comprising an example depicting a mourning angel beside a graveside memorial, inscribed, "C.Car.../ I.MA...," housed in a gilt pendant case with hairwork border, the bottom of case engraved, "S.M. Phillips Pinxt.," watercolor, the verso lined with silk; a pendant with scene depicting a mourner beneath will tree, probably Norwegian, inscribed, "Die Erindring AE Chatrine," watercolor, the verso with woven hairwork; a hairwork spray housed under glass lenses, accented by seed pearls and gilt wire, housed in gilt pendant case, inscribed to upper edge on both sides, "Anthony Lyster" and "Deborah Lyster"; a pendant with hairwork sprays against  églomisé background with anchor motif, heightened with gilt cipher, "BD," the verso with woven hairwork heightened with gilt cipher, "ED"; a pendant with hairwork sprays accented by seed pearls and gilt wire against foil background, housed in gilt pendant case, the verso containing foil; a black enameled pendant accented by paste stone encrusted floral sprays, gilt case, the verso with aperture containing woven hairwork, surrounded by gilt border engraved, "Harriet Cecilia Haffenden/ Died 24th March 1848 Aged 27"; and a large pendant with hairwork sprays tied with gilt wire against silk background, housed in gilt pendant case, the verso engraved, "Richard Babington Turbutt's Hair/ Cut Shot at 5 years old/ July 1892."
