Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Post-Civil War Cabinet Card of African American veteran and nurse.
3 15/16 x 5 7/16 in. cabinet photograph on slightly larger cardstock mount.
A distinguished African American couple is featured, with the man seated in an ornate chair and the woman standing and wearing a long, dark dress and a long scarf over her head. The man bears a resemblance to Dr. Alexander Augusta, who served as a surgeon during the Civil War. Since there are no known images of Augusta as an older man, the identity of the sitter can only be speculative.
The woman's garb is very similar to that worn by African American Civil War nurse Susie King Taylor, suggesting that profession but certainly not that identity. It is possible the pair of sitters here served and/or worked together in the medical field at some point.
Regardless of the identities of the sitters, this is a rare and fascinating image showing a likely African American nurse with an African American veteran sporting a GAR badge.
