A vignetted view after an ambrotype or tintype of an African American infantry sergeant posed with his Model 1840 non-commissioned officer's sword. Although unidentified, the officer may have served with one of the following regiments: 1st Kansas Colored Volunteers, organized 13 January - 2 May 1863, redesignated 79th USCT and mustered out 1 October 1865. The regiment served primarily in Missouri, engaging the Confederates several times, including at the Battle of Honey Springs; or the 2nd Kansas Colored Volunteers, organized 11 August -17 October 1863, redesignated 83rd USCT and mustered out 9 October 1865. The regiment was best known for its bravery during the battle of Jenkins Ferry, Arkansas.
