Lot Description
GRIGGS, Sutton Elbert (1872-1933). The Hindered Hand. Nashville: The Orion Publishing Co., 1905.
8vo. (Title page partially detached but present.) Original cloth (rubbing, sunning to spine).
Third edition revised. The Hindered Hand was written in response to Thomas Dixon's novel The Leopard's Spots, the first in Dixon's infamous Reconstruction trilogy. Countering Dixon's points about the perceived inherent inferiority of African Americans, the third edition of The Hindered Hand also features an essay by Griggs entitled "A Hindering Hand: The Poor White and the Negro" in which he criticizes Dixon for instilling fear and prejudice among poor whites against their African American neighbors.
